The difference between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel

316 stainless steel and 304 stainless steel are austenitic stainless steels, which are widely used in various industrial and civil fields. Their main differences are in alloy composition and properti es, and the following are their main differences:

1. Alloy composition:

304 stainless steel: The main components are 18% chromium (Cr) and 8% nickel (Ni), so it is also called 18/8 stainless steel.

316 stainless steel: In addition to containing 18% chromium and 10% nickel, 2% molybdenum (Mo) is added, which makes the performance of 316 stainless steel more superior.

2. Corrosion resistance:

304 stainless steel: it has good corrosion resistance and is suitable for most environments, but it has poor corrosion resistance to chloride ions (such as seawater).

316 stainless steel: due to the addition of molybdenum, its corrosion resistance is stronger, especially in chloride-containing environments such as seawater and chemical solvents.

3. Strength and hardness:

304 stainless steel: the strength and hardness are relatively low.

316 stainless steel: due to the addition of molybdenum, its strength and hardness have been improved.

4. Machinability:

304 stainless steel: good machinability, easy to form and weld.

316 stainless steel: due to its high hardness, it is slightly more difficult to process than 304 stainless steel.

5. Price:

304 stainless steel: Because the alloy composition is simple, the price is relatively low.

316 stainless steel: Because it contains more nickel and molybdenum, the price is relatively high.

6. Application field:

304 stainless steel: widely used in architectural decoration, household goods, auto parts, food processing and other fields.

316 stainless steel: Because of its excellent corrosion resistance, it is widely used in marine environment, chemical equipment, medical instruments, high temperature applications and other fields.

7. Heat resistance:

304 stainless steel: Good heat resistance, but long-term high-temperature use may affect its performance.

316 stainless steel: better heat resistance, suitable for more severe high temperature environment.
